Guinea-Bissau
Inclusion of children with and without disability
Guinea-Bissau is one of the poorest countries in the world (ranked 174 out of 189 in HDI 2022). Those particularly affected by the unfavourable living conditions are children with physical or intellectual disabilities. Many disabled children are killed or abandoned when they fail to meet the traditional expectations of a newborn. Children with a disability are effectively prevented from attending kindergarten or starting school.
The Caritas Bissau runs the “Casa Bambaran” children’s centre with kindergarten and affiliated school. 30 children live permanently at this centre and 364 children attend the kindergarten and school. The school is considered a model for the educational inclusion of children and young people with a disability in Guinea-Bissau.
With the support of the Redel Foundation, financing will be provided for the following measures, among others:
- Food, hygiene articles and clothing for boarders
- Materials for running the (self-sufficient) school garden
- Supply of teaching and learning materials
- Equipment for physiotherapy
The Redel Foundation is supporting the project with €70,000.
